 I am using OGR2OGR 1.8.1, and I observe that I have run into ogr2ogr bug
 http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/4217 , which has been fixed in v1.9
 beta.

 My question remains is it safe to leave the rule in place? It maintains
 compatibility with my older clients (admittedly they are using QGIS v. 1.6
 or so, so I can update them if needed).
