This may make no sense, but you are talking a bit of apples and oranges -
because "shp2pgsql shapefile table db | psql -d db" is piping to psql - does
that use the same mechanism that the pgsql2shp is using?

What I wanted to say is, that
shp2pgsql shapefile table db | psql -d db
is running fine and uploading data is no problem. I don't get an error
message about any TCP/IP problems.
So my problem still exists, that I can't get my data out of the table into a
shapefile.
Reading the Online Doc there should not be a problem using the dumper. It's
only the
pgsql2shp [<options>] <database> <table>
command from the commandline, isn't it?
