Are you already familiar with postgresql in itself and the concept of
relational databases? If so, think of postgis as adding (among other
things) simply another data type called "geometry". Rather than just
storing text and number attributes in the tables, you can also store
geometry (that is, sets of coordinates that define points, lines, polygons,
etc.). It doesn't run off or manipulate shapefiles - but there are tools
available that can take a shapefile and convert it into a bunch of
statements to insert the geometry (and attributes) into a postgis table.
Does that make some sense to you?

I'm a new user of postgis... and honestly i find it a bit hard to establish
a good grasp on the geometry functionalities of this postgresql
extension... can anyone be kind enough to refer me to any existing websites
regarding as to how the these functions manipulate shapefiles??? or are
there any existing documentations (detailed) regarding them?? thanks guys!
